Aftermath (Desmond)

[Garrett Speelers]

Garrett sat in an olive green folding chair on the front porch of his brother's apartment. There was a can of Sam Adams int the right arm cup holder, and a half empty bottle of corona in the left that Garrett was careful to avoid. The Sam Adams was his, as was the pack of Marlboro on the ground beside him.

He took a drag from the cigarette in between his fingers and let the smoke issue out of his mouth. He sighed contentedly for a moment before, hitting the call button on his cell phone and waiting for Desmond to pick up on the other end.

Desmond was leaving his first drumline practice after coming back to school. It have been a slightly annoying ordeal with everyone being extra nice to him. The instructor didn't even yell at him when he messed up! He just gave him a pat on the back and said 'That's ok Desmond, just trying again.' Normally it would be a screaming rampage! Desmond was more than happy when it was time to leave, except for the fact that he had to give Vinnie's little sister Lena a ride home. That was the only part of drumline Desmond didn't miss. Desmond was half way to his car in the senior lot with Lena following behind him when his phone rang. The caller ID on the front screen of his hot pink Razer read 'Garrett'. Desmond flipped his phone opened so fast he was surprised it didn't snap in half.


"How was it?" he asked seriously, "Oh, and by the way, your code name is 'Honey Bear', just in case someone is spying."

"Well it -- honey bear?-- really? You couldn't have picked something slightly less emasculating?" he said in mock offended tones. "Oh nothing out of the ordinary really, your soul is apparently in danger and I need to help save it. Also I'm spying on you and the GSA in doing this. So I'm supposed to be pretending to be you r friend while really working for them. . .apparently Faye and Justice are doing this too."

"If I call you 'Honey Bear' while I'm on the phone hopefully people will assume I'm talking to my boyfriend and not you. Plus I'm gay and calling you that just amuses the hell out of me." said Desmond sarcastically as he unlocked his car door and got inside. "Anyway, that sounds absolutely splendid. I only wish I was there to hear all the fabulous things Prudence said about me. Well, we're going to have to be careful because I expect Prudence to be watching you almost all the time. She runs the Alliance of Christian students like it's her own secret service." Desmond to a moment to pause, think, and start his car. Lena kept giving him questioning looks from the passenger side, but didn't say anything.

Desmond sighed. "Did she say anything else important? I mean, did she mention any specific plans they had?" he said.

Garrett chuckled slightly at Desmond's response to honey bear, and took another drag from his cigarette before replying.

"Yeah I didn't go back home so I could make this call," he informed Desmond. "I figured they might try something."

"Did she say anything else important? I mean, did she mention any specific plans they had?"

"Not much besides that really. I mean I'd watch out for that Warren kid, he might be trying something, but otherwise they just want us to cut you off from Cynthia. . .they think you that'll stop the GSA somehow. . ."

"Cut me off from Cyn? Well, that would be trouble some, but I don't think it would halt GSA." said Desmond as he pulled out of the parking lot. Cynthia was a lot better at organizing stuff and she kept track of most of GSA's business. She was pretty much the vise president and secretary. "How do they expect to keep her away from me all the time? They're really taking this seriously aren't they? I can't wait until I'm cornered in the hallway one of this days by a bunch of Jesus lovers who want to save my soul."

"Lucky me, I'm supposed to tell them whenever you guys are going to have meetings so they can find a way to I don't know. . .kidnap Cynthia or something. . ." he grumbled, picking up the can of Sam Adams, with the remains of his Marlboro still stuck between his index and middle finger, and taking a sip. "As for your soul. . .you're going to get the hell heckled right out of you by the bible thumping Justice. Don't you feel saintly and special?"

[Desmond Giuseppe]

"Oh yes, I can barely breath from anticipation." said Desmond, each word dripping with sarcasm. "Watch I'll get home and she'll be hiding in my closet or something. Tomorrow is gonna a suck because I know it's all going to start as soon as I set foot in that school. And, aw crap, we have to pretend to hate each other don't we?!" If Desmond and Garrett looked all buddy buddy with each other at school that was defiantly going to raise a red flag with the Jesus lovers. "Wait. . . or are you supposed to be pretend to be friends with me? In that case you would be my friend, pretending to hate me, pretending to be my friend. . ."

"Are you people trying to make my head explode?" Garrett asked. "Yes 'm your friend pretending to hate you so I can join the Bible Thumpers Anonymous who want me to pretend to be your friend so that I can really spy on the GSA."

When he finished her rolled his eyes and sighed. God, his life couldn't get any more complicated if he tried.

Desmond had to take a moment to take this all in. "I, um, I think I get it." said Desmond slowly. "Soooo, tomorrow we begin hating each other? OH! OH! We should stage this huge fight and stuff! It'll be fabulous! We can have Vinnie and Tad come and break it up and stuff and Audrey can call you a bitch and we can pretend to be all like 'grrrr!' toward each other!"

Garrett finished off his cigarette and flicked it carelessly to the ground, crushing the ashes with his pair of black chucks.

"Except now they expect me to apologize for ditching you in the first place and they expect you'll forgive me and trust me again," he said in response.

[Desmond Giuseppe]

"Oh." said Desmond with an obvious air of disappointment. "Aww, I wanted to have a fight! Well, I guess not that I think of it that probably wouldn't do too well for GSA's chances of any type of support from the school board." Desmond sighed. Looking at how illogical the staged fight would be didn't help his disappointment. "Well, I guess we should stage some type of apology and make sure that we do it with either Prudence or Justice watching."

"That shouldn't be too difficult to do," he agreed.

Patrick turned up the speakers. . .he was having a party with some of his old college buddies and some of his more recent friends inside. Garrett shut the door to his right so that he could hear Desmond.

"Sorry. . .I could barely hear myself think."

[Desmond Giuseppe]

Desmond hear the commotion in the background. "Why Gary-Poo, are you at Babylon?!" said Desmond teasingly. "I do hope Prudence doesn't see you walking out otherwise she might nail you to a cross and force you to read the bible!"

"Yes Desmond," he said with a chuckle. "I of all people am at Babylon. . . Pat's having a party inside . . .although I wouldn't' put that past her."

[Desmond Giuseppe]

Desmond laughed. "Well, I dunno Honey Bear, maybe my queerness could have rubbed off on you." he said, "Ok, so, tomorrow we staged the best apology every. I don't think we'll have to wait very long for Justice and Prudence to start stalking you so I'm thinking it should happen first thing in the morning. Okay?"

"Yeah, sounds like a pan to me," Garrett said, chugging the rest of his beer and tossing the can in the direction of the trash can. It missed, but he doubted anyone would ever notice.

"Ok, I'll see you bright and early tomorrow morning." said Desmond before he hung up.
