Since it was an unnaturally nice day for October Vinnie thought it would be nice to eat outside. His friend whom he normally sat with preferred it inside, but Vinnie didn't mind sitting outside by himself, he wasn't about to pressure them if they didn't want to. Plus he needed some time to think about what to do about home coming. He really wanted to take Faye, but was too shy to ask her and he normally was a very out going fellow. He didn't want to go by himself, but he just didn't know what to do!
There were a few other small groups of students here and there, but not a whole lot. All the benches were taken though so Vinnie just took a seat on the cold stone floor with his try next to him. Thank God he's just gotten a sandwich and not something that required him to have his plate right in front of him.

Viola came outside because that's what all the cool guys seemed to be doing. She nodded at a couple of kids she passed.
" 'Sup?" she said to a guy she'd seen in her Prob and Stats class, while adding, "Ladies," with a quirked eyebrow to a group of chattering girls. She didn't notice the look of mingled confusion and disgust on their faces as she walked away.
It was then she spotted Vinnie stting by himself. She grinned and readjusted her tie as she made her way over to him with a wrap and a soda in her hands.
" Hey there dude," she said. "Mind if Ah join ya?"

Vinnie saw Sebastian enter the court yard and had to try his hardest not to laugh; the poor kid really had poor people skills. He was cool enough though and Vinnie felt bad for him; it must be hard transferring to a new school suddenly and not knowing any one.
"Sure." said Vinnie patting the stone floor. "Pull up some stone and pop a squat. Plenty of room."

"Thanks, brah," she said taking a seat. "So, what's got ya down?"
She nudged him jokingly in the arm, while she took a bite of her wrap. She had actually noticed Vinnie had looked pensive while she approached, but asking him if he was all right didn't seem very manly.

"Oh, nothing." said Vinnie with a shrug, "I just don't know what to do about home coming. I want to ask Faye, but I'm too shy and I don't think I can handle the rejection if she says no. Then again I don't know how to handle it if she says yes, I think I'd be all shy and awkward at the dance and that's not like me at all. And I don't want to go by myself you know? But if I don't go at all my friends will never let me live it down. You met Faye this morning, what do you think of her?"

"Ohhh," she said awkwardly. "Well I mean, she's all right, I guess, if you're into that kind of girl."
She quick took another bite of her wrap so it gave her time to think. What kind of advice could one dude give to another without being weird?
"Well, I guess if you don't want to go alone, aren't there any others chicks you could ask?"

"Well. . ." Vinnie began awkward, "I actually seriously considered asking your cousin the other day when I ran into her in the mall, but I thought it would be too creepy since that was only the third time I've ever seen her." Vinnie felt a little weird talking about Viola because she was Sebastian's cousin. Vinnie was the protective type when it came to his sister, what if Sebastian was like that with Viola? Vinnie had just made friends with the kid and didn't want to screw it up. "But I dunno. . . I guess I'd be more comfortable with Viola than Faye." Vinnie shrugged, "I hope you don't mind me talking about her."

Viola felt herself choke on the wrap a little while Vinnie was talking. . . which she tried an failed to act smoothly during.
"No, man. . .you go right ahead and talk about her," he said. "Well if you like Viola, and it sounds to me like you might, you should go ahead an ask her to the dance. I mean if you're afraid Faye might say no. . .it might be better that way."

"Are you ok?" Vinnie asked with concern when Sebastian choked on his wrap. Quite a girly meal choice when he thought about. Sebastian seemed to be ok because he started talking again.
"I guess you're right." said Vinnie pushing some hair out of his face, "but just for the record; we're just friends. I mean, I think she's really cool and all, but I like Faye." Vinnie just wanted to make sure his intentions were clear. "Well, do you think you could give me her number or something? I dunno, or maybe you can arrange for her to meet after school in the diner or something. I really don't know the best way of going about this. I don't want to seem creepy."

"Oh right sure," Viola said, trying to play it cool. "That's what I meant: just as friends ."
She frowned slightly and had a feeling she and Faye weren't going to get along very well this semester.
"But yeah ya know, I could give you her number or tell her to meet you at the diner no prob," she continued. "Which evah is easier."

"Ahhhhh." Vinnie thought about what he should do. "I guess calling her would be less creepy, plus less chance of the conversation getting awkward." If their phone conversation got awkward he could always say he had to go, but in person you just couldn't do that. "Could I please have her number?" He'd might as well asked Viola; it didn't look like things were going to work out with Faye.

"Yeah and you can always make a quick panicked hang up," she said over annunciating her words in what she thought was a manly way.
She could have smacked herself in the forehead. That wasn't what she wanted him to do, but rather a comforting though she had whenever she had to make a phone call she didn't particularly want to make.
Yeah, it's uh," she quickly fumbled through her man purse for her cell phone, realizing it would look fishy if she knew it by heart. She pressed a few buttons to make it look like she was doing something. "484-914-9227."

"Great." said Vinnie, putting the number into his contact list on his cell phone. "Thanks. I'll probably call her after school. . . do you think she'll say yes?" Vinnie would feel like a total loser if Viola said no. Not because he thought she was loser or anything and didn't want to be turned down by a loser, not that if that's what you were thinking cus that's totally not what Vinnie is thinking and I know I'm starting to sound sarcastic, but I'm totally serious. Vinnie just didn't know how to handle female rejection because he lack of a mother.

"Oh uhh yeah," she said. "I'm sure she will. 'Cause ya know, she lacks a social life so she's good like that."
Again with the face smacking. . . she rolled her eyes and quickly checked her watch.
"Uh well wouldja look at that?" she said with over emphasized awe. "I have to leave so I can, uh use the bathroom before class."
